What type of pain do you have ?

Characteristics of acute pain are:

  •     It is severe unremitting and can have a recent abrupt onset.
  •     Pain can be debilitating and disabling relief is not provided by usual measures rest, heat, analgesics.
  •     Pain can be continuous repeated bouts of pain result in patient actively seeking help.
  •     Associated symptoms can be severe weakness, pallor, sweating and head pain.

Acute pain for the most part, results from disease, inflammation, or injury to tissues. It is immediate and usually of a short duration. Acute pain is a normal response to injury and may be accompanied by anxiety or emotional distress. Acute pain can be debilitating and disabling relief is not provided by usual measures rest, heat, analgesics.

Characteristics of chronic pain are:

  •     There was a memory of pain experienced before and has remitted spontaneously or after simple measures of treatment.
  •     Its usually not disabling

 

Chronic pain is continuous pain that persists for more than three months, and beyond the time of normal healing. It ranges from mild to severe and can last weeks, months, or years to a lifetime. The cause of chronic pain is not always evident, although it can be brought on by chronic conditions such as arthritis and fibromyalgia. Chronic pain can often interfere with a patient’s quality of life, sleep, and productivity.
